Showcase: PE based Silver Spoon

Silver Spoon is quite literally the love child of Port Elizabeth based designers Dieter van den Bergh and Stephanie Beyers. Both completed their B-tech Fashion at the NMMU (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University)

The label started out in a garage in the picturesque suburb of Richmond Hill in 2008 and has grown to become one of the city’s most recognised small businesses. “We like beautiful things. So we decided to make our own. Silver Spoon is a line that makes us happy. A quaint place to channel everything we’ve learnt. We make functional pieces with character; things you could wear to the market. Or the park. Or a visit to your distant aunt for your usual cup of tea. It’s you, with a touch of thread and fabric thrown in for good measure.”

Silver Spoon has been showing with SA Fashion Week since 2009, the label supplies 25 stores country wide and won the Marie Claire Prix De La Mode for business savvy upcoming label in 2010. They were chosen to represent the Eastern Cape in the DAC (Department of Arts and culture) fashion fusion project in partnership with SA Fashion Week in 2011, and also took part in the Design Indaba expo in 2011. The label is currently part of the Edgars & SA Fashion week designer capsule collection which is showcased in the flagship Melrose Arch store as part of initiative to grow South African labels and help them to be exposed to selling their products directly to the public in a chain store environment.

Silver Spoon runs their own production out of their Richmond Hill Bain street studio which also houses a small shop where the public is welcome to purchase the garments where they are made. The store also carries other labels as well as jewellery and home wear.
