Who is Frederick Mpuuga and what do you do?
I am a Concept and Storyboard Artist based in Cape Town.
Where did you learn your craft or would you say it comes natural to you?
It’s been a long journey that’s still in progress. All the way from Art school, but mostly my natural inclination towards the creative industry.
What exactly does a storyboard/concept artist do?
As a storyboard artist, I help put together quick or detailed sequential illustrations, of what a director/producer wants to come up with, in a film/TV commercial/ music video/any other Audio-Visual medium.
In concept design I usually work under a Production designer or Art director. Where I come up with detailed full-colour illustrations, of sets that portray what they (designer/art director) are preparing to construct and dress for film, commercial or stage-show.
What are you currently working on?
Currently I’m working on a TV series but would rather not disclose the details.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
I would advise young South Africans to follow their passion and work at polishing their skills. The technical demands in this industry change very fast. Networking with the right kind of people is key.
