Who is Seth Beukes, where are you based and what do you do?
I am based in Johannesburg and I am a doodle addict .I’m also a full-time digital designer and a part-time illustrator.
Where did you learn your illustration skills or would you say it’s natural to you?
I studied illustration and design (BA Visual Communication Design) at Stellenbosch University for 4 years. I would say that illustration comes naturally to me; however that’s only because I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember.
Tell us about the awesome collection of work, ‘Room 5a’
Well, Room 5a was part of a project initiated by the Cape Town illustration studio Am I Collective, entitled Illville Hotel (www.illvillehotel.com). I was to illustrate my interpretation of a hotel room, that forms part of the Illville Hotel and my room (5a) was based on the idea of moving into a hotel room, with weird and wonderful things that break free from the boxes creating a scene of chaos.
What are you currently working on?
Currently I’m working on a lot of t-shirt and hoodie designs for a clothing label I wish to launch sometime this year. I’m also constantly busy creating shoe art, customising sneakers by drawing on them with a waterproof pen and also a lot of random projects here and there.
What advice would you give to young South African creatives looking to do what you do.?
My advice is to do as much as you can, keep producing work and don’t be afraid of showing your work, or of what people will think of it. Critique and failure are vital in the learning experience. Also be willing to experiment different mediums and techniques, it is what makes this field so interesting.
