Today we chat to the muti talented Retha Ferguson
Who is Retha Ferguson, where are you based and what do you do?
I’m a Cape Town based freelance photographer and illustrator. Who I am is a loaded question; I’d say I’m an uncomfortably positioned cowboy hat on a cross eyed seal.
You are a fine artist, illustrator and photographer. Which defines you best?
I am firstly a social documentary photographer and secondly an illustrator. I specifically like to work on editorial illustrations. “Fine artist” describes me the least, I’m trying to rid that word from my vocabulary.
Your illustration work ‘Dysfunkt‘, is quirky and intriguing tell us more about the project?
It was an experiment in writing for me which largely failed. I hope that I have moved on from that work. I’m hoping my recent cartoons show some kind of evolution, since I busied myself with Dysfunkt.
Tell us about your new websites www.aardwolfkin.co.za and www.foxeye.co.za. What are they about?
They are basically just a breakdown of my work and the projects I’ve been involved with. Foxeye features my photography and Aardwolfkin features my illustrations.
What advice would you give to young South African creatives looking to do what you do.?
Never stop questioning where you are heading. Over-think everything. Try not to be elitist.
