An invitation to creative youth to design sustainably

Now in its third cycle the 2012-2013 Fresh Talent Sustainable Design Competition, themed Small Change; A World of Difference, is calling on SA’s creative young people to enter.

The organising non-profit organisation Shift (formally known as Eco Design Initiative), has embarked on their 2012 Sustainable Design Road Show. The team is visiting colleges and universities across the country to deliver talks and toolkits with practical information and resources to support young designers in achieving sustainability. Various aspects of the competition are being discussed and students invited to enter.

The team have already been to Kwa-Zulu Natal, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. Due to popular demand the team will do a final round in Cape Town in the third week of August. The dates and times for the additional Cape Town visits are still to be confirmed. To find out more information please email info@theshift.org.za.

Janine Johnston, CEO of Shift says: “The Road Show forms a very important part of what Shift does as an organisation. Although the competition is our platform to showcase examples of sustainable design, we want to infiltrate the classroom and give lecturers and students the resources to help them think and design sustainably for our planet.”

Design is about solving problems and making life better. Sustainable design thinking and processes involves considering the social, environmental and economic aspects of development, while paying attention to the impacts on these at each phase of a product, system or service’s lifecycle.

Shift will be visiting the following institutions during their road show:

South African design and creative youth are invited to submit proposals for products, systems and services in response to the competition brief, Small Change; A World of Difference.

This call to action challenges the creative community to suggest ways in which seemingly small shifts and improvements can influence significant positive change to local and global communities and natural environments.

To enter, designers should submit detailed concept proposals for innovative, sustainable solutions that may span various contemporary design fields from product, industrial and surface design, communication and graphic design, textile and fashion design, architecture and engineering, new models for sustainable business and community development projects.

Presentations may be submitted in the form of mood/story boards, video or sound clips, graphic depictions or even written proposal documents – whichever format is most effective in conveying the details of the design concept.

Concept presentations should be delivered to: Shift: Inspiring Sustainable Design, Office 104, The Valyland Centre, Upper Recreation Road & Valyland, Fish Hoek, 7975. Electronic submissions are accepted and should be sent to info@theshift.org.za .

Submissions close on 28 September 2012.  The competition is only open to South African citizens not older than 35 years. For more information visit www.theshift.org.za, or email info@theshift.org.za.
