Who is Caroline Vos and what do you do?
I’d like to consider myself as an artist who illustrates to pay the bills. I work commercially in the advertising and publishing industries as an illustrator. I use my free time to work on my book and series of artworks that are more precious to me.
How would you define your style or art?
I have a varied style. I think you could possibly say that I have a commercial style that is pliable ( as it needs to be ) and that my personal work is a lot more painterly and the subject matter more poetic. I find it very difficult to define my own style 🙂
What inspires your work?
The list is long. I’m constantly researching styles and looking for inspiration to keep me on my toes. At the end of the day you can only expose yourself to so much inspiration before you need to turn inwards and find something inside of you that inspires. Sometimes I find it difficult to turn off all the stuff I’ve seen on the internet and tune into what makes me as an individual tick. Finding that is very hard for me but when I do I would say, that is the inspiration I would like to listen to and take the most seriously.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on a World of Warcraft character, a series of avatars for a government education site, a character for a cosmetic brand and studying in the evenings.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Spend every spare second you have sketching. Use the world as your inspiration first, and the internet second. Manage your exposure. Get yourself on all the portals. Enter competitions. Handle your business seriously, Invoice and quote professionally, be prompt, deliver on time – that way when you ask to be paid 50% upfront or ask for changes in contracts, your clients will treat you like the professional you have shown yourself to be.
