The Village Under The Forest to screen at Labia on Monday

Following a standing ovation at its sold-out world premiere at Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, The Village Under The Forest will screen at The Labia in Cape Town on Monday, 17 June at 4m.

The Village Under The Forest explores the hidden remains of the destroyed Palestinian village of Lubya, which lies under a purposefully cultivated forest plantation called South Africa Forest.

Directed by Emmy-winner Mark J Kaplan and written and narrated by scholar and author Heidi Grunebaum, The Village Under The Forest unfolds as a personal meditation from the Jewish Diaspora.

Using the forest and the village ruins as metaphors, the documentary explores themes related to the erasure and persistence of memory and dares to imagine a future in which dignity, acknowledgement and co-habitation become shared possibilities in Israel/Palestine.

The Village Under The Forest is also screening at The Bioscope in Johannesburg on Saturday at 8pm, but this is sold out.

Book tickets via The Labia on 021 424 5927 or

    Truth Teller

Grunebaum-Ralph, Heidi English Department at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa. This South African anti-Jew stated [in a private conversation] that Israel needed to be destroyed with nuclear weapons in order to cleanse the world of its crimes, that all Israelis , including children need to die and that she hopes to use her knowledge of Hebrew to help HAMAS and the PFLP in intelligence work. She also noted that “support for Israeli aggression threatens both the moral and physical survival of the Jewish people. The overt support and the silent echo chamber around it robs us of our humanity and denies the lessons we Jews should have learned from our own history of oppression. Complicity, active or passive, in the subjugation of others also damages the credibility of the Jewish people by seeking to identify all Jews with actions which people of goodwill around the world rightly find shameful.”
She has been accused of contacting Hamas to offer them her support in decrypting Hebrew for use by their military wing.
Heidi wants to use economic boycotts against Israel “because that is how apartheid in South Africa was brought to an end”.
She also signed a January 2009 petition condemning Israel’s retaliatory attack on Gaza.
