Donning his trademark hat-with-feather, Conn Bertish joined the Cape Town QuirkStation in January 2013 to lead our creative charge as Executive Creative Director. From a young age, Conn knew he was destined to be just like Indiana Jones and so he duly Majored in Archaeology and Sociology at UCT. When he realised his idea of “being Indiana Jones” was not quite how he expected it to be based on Harrison’s Ford’s experience, he went on a world-travelling surf adventure. Then it was back on home soil to Red and Yellow to become a master of words by studying Copywriting. Conn created various award-winning campaigns at Ogilvy, The Jupiter Drawing Room, Saatchi&Saatchi and most recently held the creative reigns at JWT. He has scooped Gold and Silver medals at all major ad festivals worldwide, including a Yellow Pencil at London’s D&AD awards for creative direction. Well respected in the industry, this dude also has a few personal tricks up his sleeve such as his hilarious social experiment and public space artworks entitled “The 0834319513 project”. He’s a keynote speaker on creative thinking and a regular contributor to local and international design and art festivals having lent his creative eye to the famous Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity as a judge. He’s devoured 15 years in the industry, fought brain cancer and come out with a zest for life, a love for the extraordinary and a passion to kick creative advertising ass. As well as being crazy about his family, Conn is surf mad and grew up with posters of Joey Buran on his wall. Still to this day, he’d give his big toe to share thoughts with George Greenough – the true genius, unknown oddball inventor of modern surfing. Conn’s a bit of a self-proclaimed oddball himself and is most at home when up the West Coast or in the Cape Point Nature Reserve with his fellow surf-crazed family and wire haired pooch.
