Illustrations By Concept and 2D Artist Malcolm Wope

Who is Malcolm Wope and what do you do?

Originally an architecture graduate, I turned to art/illustration about four years ago and now work as a concept and 2D artist for an online gaming and animation studio in Cape Town. I have also always been an avid comic fan writing scripts and working on my own during my spare time when I can.

How would you define your style or art?

I like to think of “style” as a design language an artist develops which can be applied to representing a variety of “styles” when needed to. That being said, I try as many different methods in the realm of character design, comics and illustration while still keeping a distinct look which I developed for myself. My style also borrows from other illustrators and comic artists I have admired in the past. The more condensed label for my style I guess would be a mix of late 80’s to mid 90’s comic art and Japanese manga.

 What inspires your work?

As mentioned above I am influenced by a lot of different illustrators and comic artists. Most notably Tomer Hanuka, James Jean and in my earlier years Joe Mad. Hiroya Oku, a Japanese manga artist best known for his work on Gantz is also pretty damn amazing. Good movies and video games in general also inspire me a lot to produce as well as even music.

What are you currently working on?

Right now I am working full-time designing game characters and interfaces for online casino games. It is quite fun as we recieve a vareity of themes that vary from fighting games to fairy tales. In my spare time I try and work as much as possible on my own comic.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do

Draw all the time! Get your 10,000 hours in! Also never stop evolving and trying new things. I also think the best quality is to be open to criticism. It is very easy to fall into the bubble of believing that you are above critique but always take what the right people have to say into consideration to further your own growth.

Where can our readers follow your work?

or follow me on

MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice (who do you prefer if you had to choose?)

Vanilla Ice. My man did a ninja turtle theme song!
