Who is Jono Dry and what do you do?
This is surprisingly hard to answer. I guess the simple answer would be I’m a young artist living and working in Cape Town. I pretty much spend all my time drawing or feeling guilty for not drawing.
How would you define your style or art?
I do surreal and hyper realistic pencil drawings.
I draw inspiration from everything around me. It’s been an interesting experience for me to constantly be looking at things with the potential of turning a situation into a drawing. I get inspiration from people and nature. I enjoy watching how people interact with each other, with nature and observing the relationships between both.
What are you currently working on?
I have just finished a series call Rational Animals which comments on the human tendency to create distance between oneself and those perceived to be different in some way – differences such as sexuality, race, religion, culture, socioeconomic status and the like. (The show is actually being launched this Friday 24th of Jan)
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Well I still consider myself a young creative and there isn’t really any guide book for this industry. As always working hard is a pretty good place to start. Exposure is key, so making sure you are seen is extremely important. Making use of things like social media is an easy place to start. I think trying to seize every opportunity that came my way and not making fear based decisions has helped me a lot to keep the ball rolling and push my career forward.
