The Dubai Lynx International Festival of Creativity brings together global talent from the film and advertising industry in the Middle East and North Africa regions from 9 March to 12 March.

Cinemark, the local representatives of Cannes Lions and its affiliates, is proud to announce that not only does this give South African talent a chance for representation on an international platform but that two South African judges have been picked to be part of the esteemed judging panel.

For the media category, Elsa Carpenter-Frank has been chosen as a South African judge while the design category will see Celina Guimaraes representing the country.

Elsa has a long history in the industry after beginning her career at Ogilvy & Mather in 1988. In her biography, she explains that after spending two years honing her media skills the travel bug bit and she left to spend time as a carefree globetrotter. She returned to Cape Town and joined JWT in 1992 and in 1994 she joined Berry Bush BBDO where she became Media Director in 1996 and was appointed to the board in 1997. In 2005 Elsa was appointed business manager at Media 24 and then became publisher of the South African edition of Shape magazine in 2005.

After a four year stint at Shape magazine, Elsa was approached to head up the Cape Town office of Initiative Media. During her tenure the Cape Town office has increased billings by 795% and revenue by 383%. Elsa has, in the past, been chairperson of the Advertising Media Association of South Africa and deputy chairperson of the Media Directors Circle, now known as the Advertising Media Forum. She has not rid herself of the travel bug.

Celina began her career at Grey Worldwide in 1999 before pursuing her design career in 2000 at TBWA Gavin Reddy under the tutelage of Nathan Reddy. She joined the Jupiter Drawing Room SA as a Creative Director and Design Director in 2005 and is currently a Creative Director at M&C Saatchi Abel.

With experience with accounts ranging from South African Airways, Edgars, Coca Cola Company, Red Square, Absa to MTN, among many other South African brands, Celina is inspired by the possibilities in design that help transform, unite and solve issues globally as well as the opportunities that design offer. With numerous design awards and acknowledgements under her belt as well as the fact that she has judged the New York Festival’s design category, Celina brings a wealth of experience as a judge to the Dubai Lynx International Festival of Creativity.

Cinemark’s Yvonne Diogo says: “Congratulations to Celina and Elsa. Being selected as a juror for Dubai Lynx is an outstanding achievement not only from a personal capacity but for the region as well.”

As the local representatives of Cannes Lions and its affiliated festivals, Cinemark’s aim is to secure positions on the various juries for South Africans. Diogo explains that this is quite a challenge as there are numerous international contenders on the scene. “So it truly calls for a celebration when professionals of Celina and Elsa’s calibre are recognised as such and can represent the region.”

The Dubai Lynx International Festival of Creativity is the Middle East and North Africa region’s annual must-attend event for the advertising and communications industry to learn, be inspired, network and celebrate.
