Illustrator and Designer David Silberbauer Shares His Passion With SA Creatives

Illustrator and Designer David Silberbauer Shares His Passion With SA Creatives

Who is David and what do you do?

David is an illustrator/artist/designer and marbles champion. I was lucky enough to grow up in the lovely Winelands of Stellenbosch and thus was always exposed to nature, plants and wonderful creatures. I graduated from Stellenbosch academy and have worked as a freelance designer and illustrator ever since, but my heart lies in art and illustration and i spend most hours drawing, my happy place.

How would you define your style or art?

Its still early days for me in the art world and Im refining, building and working on my style on a regular basis. At the moment i like to see myself “fine-illustrator” something between a fine-artist and illustrator. But is that even a thing?

What inspires your work?

What inspires me, well thats difficult as this changes on a regular basis, but mostly its complexities and patterns that get me going. I get a kick out of intricate patterns whether they be man made or natural. Ancient architecture has also been a great source of inspiration for me lately, as shown in some of my latest works

What are you currently working on?

Its a secret. ok no ill give you a sniff… Im working on illustrating things the human eye can’t see. Plants and skin cells at microscopic levels, bacteria, spores and stuff like that. Im just kinda seeing where it takes me. Theres an entire world out there moving around underneath our noses and we dont even see whats going on. Now aided with technology we can see whats happening and its beautiful, well to me anyway! Some of these intricate formulated patterns even kill you, like viruses, ya think about that!.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do

hahah! Im trying to figure this out myself, but id definitely say follow your passion and use that as your fuel, its the driving force that will take your great work and push it to the excellence level. Also, draw, draw, draw and draw all the time and every day!
