Who is AJ van Niekerk and what do you do?
At the age of 24, I still do not have a title behind my name. I have different titles. Some people say Illustrator, others say artist, some say designer and some say photographer. I Studied Fine Art at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. My focus was to study and learn about poster design, hand drawn illustrations, live band photography and other different mediums. Now I consider my self as an Illustrator. Creating posters, illustrations and paintings.
How would you define your style or art?
Punk Art. I find my work very simplistic but also in your face. My personal work in a sense is propaganda.
What inspires your work?
I follow the Aestheticism movement. I have that basic need to create something true for myself but also for the public. Showing people the aesthetics of life inspire me. Music falls under that movement. Honesty and creativity in music helps me to motivate myself. Music is the second reason I wake up in the morning .Art is first reason and coffee is last! I also take my passion for music and create illustrations. Unpacking the storytelling of great songs and making something almost as great as the songs inspires me a lot.
What are you currently working on?
I have an ongoing online series called “Currency”. It’s a different view on mainstream culture. It is a series that show a different kind of pencil drawing, by tracing money with pencil. In August I am going join a team of other artists to draw scenes of the music festival Oppikoppi. Capturing the festival in a different light or even shade.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Respect your authority, but also ask why.
