Unsung Art is the people’s hero in the art world, breaking the norms by not only making beautiful original art affordable to the amateur art collector but giving the emerging (and established) artist an alternative online platform to showcase their work. Founded in early 2014, Unsung Art is the passion project of the creators of Chicken and Wolf (Pty) Ltd, a boutique creative agency based in the Bo-Kaap, Cape Town.
With its roots in the Cape Town art community, Chicken and Wolf (Pty) Ltd saw a gap with regard to the accessibility of art, from both the artist’s and art collector’s perspective. For the aspiring art collector on a budget, Unsung Art provides an opportunity for them to invest in works of both ‘up and coming’ and established artists like Atang Tshikare, Adele van Heerden and Robert Greeff (some of which have exhibited in Dubai, Europe and New York), without breaking the bank. By using an online platform, buyers can also browse at their leisure and in the comfort of their own homes.
For the emerging and established artist, Unsung Art provides an affordable ecommerce platform and takes care of the packaging, marketing and distribution. It’s hassle-free. And by being exposed to Unsung Art’s growing audience, the artist is given an opportunity to generate an income from their artwork.
“We realised there was gap in the market with many artists not getting enough exposure and buyers not having a variety of affordable original pieces to choose from,” says Walter Louw co-founder of Unsung Art. “Everyone should be able to collect art, and it shouldn’t be an intimidating exercise”, Louw continues.
Unsung Art currently works with 15 artists, exhibiting over 70 pieces of art, ranging from R150 to R850.
