Photography by Czech Born, Cape Town Based Photographer Gabriela Slegrova

Who is Gabriela Slegrova and what do you do?

I grow up in Czech republic in very sporty family. Loved traveling and sunshine, with Czech republic unfortunately did not have enough of. That is on of the reason I live last 9years in Cape town. I am working in fitness industry and also as mountain guide. Stunning scenery is one of the things why I started photography

How would you define your style or art?

I used to photograph landscapes, seascapes, night photography with Milky way in Karoo. I have learned a lot with self portraits. The most beautiful places I often have to climb the mountain or be on the edge of rock on the sea side, thats why to have me as model and photographer us just so much easier.

But what I love most at the moment is underwater photography. Not fish and corals in the ocean, but girls in beautiful dress 🙂 My underwater photography and romantic dreamscapes are both romantic, dreamy, surreal, feminine.

What inspires your work?

Mostly I get inspired by my surroundings, nature, season of the year. I also get inspired by other photographers works. But mostly the ideas are just keep on coming into my head on their own. I love to get idea and then prepare for the shoot. I always get excited the day before, sometimes even struggle to sleep. Photography is very addictive :

What are you currently working on?

Well at the moment I am trying to prepare properly for the summer when I can shoot again in the swimming pools. I have mastered the technique and all the issues I had on the beginning (and it was quite a lots of them) so now I can start to focus on creating story under water

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?

For the beginners: shoot as much as you can, so you will drive your camera easy and automatic as your car. Use the Manual mode only.

Then start to think what is it exactly you wanna focus and be photographing……..find your style. It is very important.

If you want to do underwater photography, most important is to have clean, but warm water. Model who is comfortable and skilled in the water. Ideally use wide angle lens and try to stay close to model. More distance you have between you and her, more haze and particles you will have on your pictures.

Photography is very expensive, specially when you are starting. Don’t stop because you can not afford to bay everything you think you need. I use very cheap underwater bag and use only natural day light and it is just perfect.
