I am forest dark
A group exhibition featuring works by Holly Knox Rhame (USA), Chrissy Lush (USA), Julio Orta (Mexico), Meytar Moran (Israel) and Pierre le Riche (South Africa).
Space Between, Woodstock ?Opening 24 March 2015 at 18:30?Running from 25 March until 31 March 2015
Rhame, Lush, Orta, Moran and Le Riche first met in 2014 when they participated in the Arteles Creative Centre’s artist-in-residence program in Finland. I am forest dark marks the one-year reunion since that encounter as they all pass through the city of Cape Town.
This pop-up exhibition is hosted by the newly established Space Between gallery in Woodstock and is a creative gathering in which the artists explore what they have found beyond the birch forests of the Finnish countryside.
The works on display range from photography, video, and painting to sound, and holds true, both visually and metaphorically, to the notion of ‘darkness’ as the title suggests. Holly Knox Rhame will be exhibiting an installation of paintings on black paper, which are created to read as primitive sentences of love, illustrating the brain’s natural process of uncovering and decoding meaning. Chrissy Lush will be exhibiting a selection of photographs from her body of work entitled The Nature of Being Seen. These works were created in Finland and explore the relationship between the body and the landscape. Julio Orta will be showing video works which he hopes will challenge and invite introspection beyond the viewer’s own subjective boundaries. Meytar Moran’s photographic works from her Black Magic series are created using an integration of medium format photography with found footage and ready-mades, resulting in fictitious-didactic line of thought. Pierre le Riche, the only South African artist to take part in this exhibition, will be showing new experimental artworks charged with the darker side of South African identity.
The exhibition will open on 24 March 2015 at 18:30 and will run until 31 March 2015.
