This weekend will see the first Africa Creatives Workshop kick off at AAA school of Advertising. Africa Creatives’ boot camp provides young entrepreneurs and practitioners in the creative/cultural industries with the business skills and networks, that will enable them to start up or continue to run successful business ventures.
The global creative economy is worth $440bn, however Africa contributes less than 1% of it. This is due to the fact that most of the market is still informal with many enterprises employing less than five people.
There are however a number of young entrepreneurs in creative industries that, despite limited resources, have informally started their own small enterprises as a means to get by. These businesses often don’t grow beyond start up phase and 74% often fails within the first year. This is due to the lack of access to capital and limited business and marketing skills. It is because of this that Africa Creatives was born.
Over a period of three days the workshop creates an environment in which 30 invited participants from diverse backgrounds gain experience in idea generation and collaboration, defining business models and pitching their business ideas.
A group of respected mentors who are industry experts will help the teams refine their ideas. The top ideas stand a chance to raise money to implement their ideas on Africa Creatives crowdfunding portal.
Africa Creatives’ boot camps are designed to:
- Develop entrepreneurial capabilities within the creative/cultural community •Incubate game changing ideas that will move the industry forward
- Develop a network of creative/cultural entrepreneurs
This weekends boot camp is purely invite only but future workshops will be opened to the public. Keep an eye out on SA Creatives to book a place in the next Africa Creatives Workshop
