Who is Wayne Bks and what do you do?
I am a visual urban artist who uses a wide variety of mediums: Vector & Digital, Graffiti, Wheat pastes, and hand screen-printing. I mainly use 2 aliases: Conform and Skiet. The former mainly for branding/design and illustration and characters. The latter for graffiti lettering.
How would you define your style or art?
It’s a basic ‘vector’ type of style. I discovered the core style in college around 2002. It was about bringing design elements into traditional graffiti. I was basically the only graffiti artist in S.A doing this back then. Nowadays though, quite a few graf artists have picked up on this aesthetic. I’ve focused a lot on robot characters; with a minimalist African/south American feel.
I also draw straight from my imagination and rarely use any reference.
What inspires your work?
I would say other artists like 123klan and flying fortress, everyday life and never knowing when you might die. The latter inspires me the most. I’ve seen 3 or 4 graffiti artists pass on, and they were really good. I’m specifically talking about Zebo, Ekon and Pastel Heart. Each bringing their own unique energy. This makes me want to not give up and never be complacent.
What are you currently working on?
I’m working on a few things. Some personal work on limited t-shirt prints and framed art. I’m trying to paint more solo outdoor walls. And the regular day to day freelance design work. I don’t count chickens too much so I won’t say more. 😉
What advice would you give young creativeS looking to do what you do?
If you know you’re good, go for it.
A lot of people will like you and a lot will also hate on you. You’ll spend a lot of time alone. Graffiti can lead you to strange people and places. Stay street smart, but know your books too.
What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
Being featured directly or indirectly in close to 20 publications. Doing graffiti with top South African and a few brilliant European artists. Managing events and working with insane musicians DJ’s and producers and rappers, who are all either household names by now or will be soon enough.
