What the author said: I had the idea of an astronaut returning to Earth and finding it ravaged and devoid of all modern communication. Managing to get to shore safely only to be left in a maddened state shortly after an encounter with one of Earth’s new denizens.

Seeing a creature like that annihilating your home planet would be a truly devastating view.
