Who is Shingai Nyagweta and what do you do?
I’m the Creative and Managing director of KuNa , an artist , colour enthusiast and lover of all things African. I design the KuNa range and manage all aspects of the KuNa brand.
Tell us about your label Kuna ?
KuNa is a children’s clothing and accessories brand that is bright and bold with an African twist. We design clothing and cute things for kids and babies, boys and girls from new born to age 10. KuNa Brings out a child’s joyous energy through colour, comfort , quality and celebration of all things modern and African . KuNa was founded five years ago and was inspired by my creative and colourful niece Kunashe.
What inspires your work?
Our clothing’s a celebration of modern Africa in in full colour!
I love our African Heritage. I am constantly inspired by African colours and creativity. Kunashe shared this passion and enthusiastically encouraged me to use colour and pattern in fun, modern and creative ways. This happy spirit and love is woven into each and every garment we make.
What are you currently working on?
We have just opened up our first Retail location in Melvile’s 27 Boxes . Next up , Pop ups ( follow our Facebook page to keep up with all our pop up locations!) and our second retail location in New | Town | Work | Shop ( the ex Potato sheds in Newtown) in November.
To round off the year we are excited to be participating for a third time in the popular Kamers Vol Geskenke in Irene Pretoria. It’s a busy season!
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Find your tribe.
If you know who your customer is, what they are drawn to , and where they hang out , you are half way to having a successful business.
What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
There have been a few over the last five years. The joy of finally opening our first happy little boutique at 27 Boxes is a big one this year . I would have to say , the most notable highlight was being selected to meet Richard Branson in December 2014 ( plus, he bought a few KuNa goodies for his 3 newborn grandchildren!).
