Karien Cherry has just won her first first at the Creative Circle Awards for her New Balance spot “Baby vs. Dale Steyn” through King James Group. This is Karien’s latest addition to a neat list of accolades earned in only her first year of directing; previously bringing home two Merit Awards from the One Show, a Bronze bird from the Loeries, and Second Place from the Creative Circle Awards.
In “Baby vs. Dale Steyn,” Karien and her team set out to test the anecdotal wisdom that a baby is naturally more fit than an adult, but no ordinary adult would do, so they went with a world-class athlete to really drive the point home. Despite limited prep time (shooting took place five days after receiving the production brief) and the red flags surrounding shooting with babies and sports stars Karien managed to create an environment where the big idea could be tested authentically – and it proved to be a good one.
Alistair King, Chief Creative Officer at King James Group was full of praise for Karien. “Karien has a warm, infectious energy about her and she brings that to her filmmaking. A baby and a sports star as your lead actors is about as tricky as it gets – so much could have gone wrong. But Karien and the entire Giant team held it together from shoot day to final edit with a firm, but always positive hand.” This positivity and warmth translated into a wonderfully engaging piece of digital content and a perfect showcase for Karien’s talents.
