The remarkable Hidden in Silence is based on the true life events of the 13 member Diamant family who were hid in the attic of two Polish orphans during the Holocaust and has been described as heart-breaking and inspiring as Schindler’s List.

It is the winner of the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Long Form – Television and tells of the orphaned Catholic sisters Stefania and Helena Podgorska, ages 16 and 9, who hid the Diamant family in the attic of their home during World War 2. Stefania had worked in the Diamant family’s grocery store before the Nazi invasion of Poland.

While some stand silent, Stefania (portrayed by ER’s Kellie Martin) chooses the role of a saviour and sneaks 13 Jews into her attic. Every day, she risks detection – and immediate execution – by smuggling food and water to the silent group living above her. And when two German nurses are assigned to her living quarters, the chances of discovery become dangerously high. This is the true story of a young woman’s selfless commitment and unwavering resolve in the face of war. The Diamants remained in the attic for two-and-a-half years and survived the Holocaust.

Stefania went on to marry one of the young men she had harboured in her attic.

In 1979, the Podgorska sisters were honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.

Last year it was announced that a private entrepreneur plans to establish a museum in the same house located on Tatarska Street in Przemysl. The house, which is in disrepair and poor condition, was purchased by Polish businessman Maciej Piorkowski.

“You can call it a whim, but I wanted this historic building saved from death so I could show its history,” Piorkowski said. “I would like the facility to be available for visitors, so that they can, for example, watch a movie (such as Hidden in Silence) about the history of the hiding.”

True Movies (DStv Channel 138) is dedicated to inspiring true-to-life films from a range of cinematic genres including drama, crime, romance and docu-soaps, mostly based on real-life events.

  • Hidden in Silence is broadcast on True Movies (DStv Channel 138) on Friday March 18 and Wednesday March 23 at 7pm.
