Who is Cindy Leah and what do you do?

I am  from Kenya- was born in the city of Nairobi. I currently live in South Africa and I live and breathe photography day in and day out. In my family, there is 6 of us- 5 girls and 1 boy. I have been living in South Africa since 2005 when I was just 12 years old.  Between the day-to-day of being a freelance photography and working at a studio- I am finishing my degree in Psychology.

Tell us about your work?

With my photography, I really don’t believe in limiting yourself- as an artist. I have tried and tested most avenues but I felt that being a photographer has always been my calling. My subjects range are mostly people- I have in most instances, been called a Street Photographer- which I relate to but I see myself simply as an artist by my liking.

What inspires your work?

I find inspiration in anything- my camera goes with me everywhere- and when I see something that captures my eye. Believe me- it will be through my viewfinder and on VSCO in seconds.

What are you currently working on?

Currently I am in between exhibitions. I have been selected as one of the few female photographers in South Africa- showcasing at the Daville Bailie Gallery on 31st May as well as the SANAA Africa Exhibition that will be held at St.Stithians that same month.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?

Grow a pair of steel balls. Honestly, within this business there’s a lot of competition and photography is something that has become very accessible very recently. So you can’t be a silly nilly. It’s knowing why you are here and how to better yourself- I choose not to focus on negativity rather at my own craft and passion for what I do. All of what I know is self- taught, I have never been to a photography school or course.

What has been the highlight of your career thus far?

I only really started following my dream as of August last year. Everything since then, has been a highlight to me.

Where can our readers follow your work?

I am socially active on Facebook as CL Cashmere Photography, Instagram: @cindyleahcashmere and most of BTS scenes about my life on Snapchat: @superbalisterlo. I really wish I could change my Snapchat name already.
