True to their motto of being leaders in the evolution of African design, Southern Guild founders Trevyn and Julian McGowan have set their sights on mentoring the newest young design talent emerging from South Africa. The result of this five-month-long process of finding never-before-seen design pieces, guiding and advising designers, pushing them to take their work in more interesting and ground-breaking directions and curating a dynamic exhibition will take the form of A New Wave, the next show to be held in Southern Guild’s Cape Town gallery, opening this August.
Following the gallery’s call for submissions for new, previously un-exhibited work by designers under the age of 40, Southern Guild received over 75 applications for A New Wave. Almost 40 designers were shortlisted and are currently in the process of producing their once-off or limited-edition pieces with the guidance of the McGowans. The exhibition will be a grand showcase for the next generation of South African collectible design.
‘The quality of the work is exceptional and we are extremely excited about this new collection for the gallery,’ says Julian. Under the McGowans’ guidance, the pieces to feature in the show demonstrate a true collaboration between Southern Guild and young designers, as the gallery continuously aims to foster the growth of design in the country. Pieces being produced for A New Wave include furniture, lighting, ceramics, wall decoration and jewellery.
As seasoned gallerists, having shown in many international fairs over the years, from Design Days Dubai, to Design Miami and Collective, Trevyn and Julian are continuously at the forefront of the global design scene, bringing South African design to the centre-stage. Says Trevyn: ‘This year, what we are most looking forward to is finding new talent and offering a platform for these pieces by young designers, as they forge ahead in creating South Africa’s design language.’
A New Wave artists include: Abrie von Wielligh, Chuma Maweni, Denny Mo, Gerrit Giebel, Kurt Pio, Mishal Adam Weston, Morné Visagie, Nehanda Magan, Philisa Zibi, Sifiso Shange, Trevor Potter and many others.
A New Wave is open to the public from 12 August to 23 September 2016.
