Who is Katleho Mofolo and what do you do?
I am an artist born in Johannesburg and raised in Soweto. I do graphic design, publications, art-direction and illustration.
How would you define your style or art?
I struggled for several years to define my style as it was mostly inspired by euro-centric and asian styles/artists, this resulted from most art history books I got exposed to in the beginning. I’ve since gravitated towards african themes/heritage, thus personally defining my style as “neo-afro-centric”… Modern/Contemporary and African.
What inspires your work?
Interacting with different people inspires my work. Books, Africa’s heritage and the internet inspires my work too.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on a conceptual series of work called celebrate, a celebration of musical talents/gifts big and small. I am also art-directing the south african national health campaign called Phila (the new Department of Health campaign approved by Dr Aaron Motsoaledi). Animal In Man is also another psycological conceptual series of artworks I am busy putting together.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Perseverance, passion, patience and honesty is key in art. Do what you believe is a true reflection of you and the people you represent. Love what you do, and do what you love. Plan your work and work your plan.
What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
Being invited to a prize giving ceremony to talk to 270 learners, their parents and teachers as a guest speaker (grade 6 and 7). Second to that was presenting Phila to the deputy president Cyril Ramphosa, and Dr Arron Motsoaledi at the Union Buildings. Thirdly, winning awards i.e PRISMA PR campaign of the year award, Gold Loerie award, Bronze Cannes Lion design award, D&AD design in-book and a Silver One Show design award.
