Crazy talented digital artist-Kyle Van Wyk

Who is Kyle Van Wyk  and what do you do?
I am a self-taught freelance digital artist working primarily in illustration and concept art. I was born and raised in Bloemfontein, lived abroad in New Zealand & England and currently live in Cape Town.

How would you define your style or art?
I don’t really have a specific style that I would claim as my own. I really enjoy learning new things and I spend a lot of time exploring various art styles, techniques and methodology to incorporate into my work. Experimentation is probably the most fun part of art for me .

What inspires your work?
I get inspiration from many sources; Music, Comics, TV shows, books, Art, Games and Nature. My greatest source of inspiration though is film .

What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on concept architectural designs for a client based in the United States and in my spare time I’m working on a small personal animation project.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Start with learning the fundamentals (Value, color, perspective, composition), I can’t stress this enough. I still study the fundamentals often, it’s the foundation that can always be improved upon, I know it’s not as exciting as painting dragons, robots or people but its whats going to make your work look great.

Also forget the notion of creating the “perfect image” and rather focus on finishing an image, you’ll improve faster in the long run. It’s okay to make bad art sometimes, it happens to the best of us. The important thing is if you put in the hours and practice.

What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
I think the highlight of my short career so far was creating a Dark souls fan art piece inspired by the Studio Ghibli’s art style. The image got shared by Fromsoftware who developed the game and went kinda viral for a short period , it’s nothing major but it was cool that they shared it, the smallest victories are sometimes the most rewarding.
