Who is Jesse Breytenbach and what do you do?
I’m a freelance illustrator. I spend as much time as I can drawing.
How would you define your style or art?
Simple, clear, narrative. I’m interested in images that tell a story, and I try to make every element of an illustration contribute to that story.
What inspires your work?
Mostly other illustrators’ work. I love looking at work that is nothing at all like mine.
What are you currently working on?
I’m illustrating stories for African Storybook (http://www.africanstorybook.org/#) and working on a maths book.
What advice would you give aspiring creatives looking to do what youdo?
Draw as much as you can.
What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
Publishing my graphic novel ‘I Don’t Like Chocolate’ was very exciting, but I tend to be focussed on whatever I’m presently working on, convinced that I’m finding better ways to do things each time. Each new job is the current highlight. Old work never looks as good as it did at the time of drawing.
