The BIC® Art Master Talent Search is on!  Artists from all corners of South Africa are invited to get creative as the stationery category leader is giving them the opportunity to win prizes for the best art that is submitted using any BIC® product, including BIC® ballpoint pens and the graphite range of pencils.

The BIC® Pen Art Master was launched in 2017 with great success. In 2018 BIC® will take the campaign a step further by including the use of any of BIC®’s range of stationery products as opposed to using only the BIC® ballpoint pen exclusively.

BIC® has an exceptional range of world class stationery products that gives students the tools to turn their creative genius into masterpieces. BIC® has a vast range which includes the BIC® 4 Colour Stylus and comes with 4 distinct colours, the ink flows smoothly, and they have long lasting cartridges. The graphite range is unique as it consists of wood-free pencils in synthetic resin and they use high grade HB lead, they are made of 57% recycled materials free from PVC.

The BIC® Art Master provides artists, whether they attend high, art or design school, university or are already applying their trade as an artist, with a platform that encourages them to create art using BIC® stationery. This year BIC® is also expanding the creative landscape and calling for artists to draw bigger scaled art.

Artists in Durban, Cape Town and Gauteng can submit their work at open days to be staged at the distinguished art and design school, Inscape; Durban (Friday, 8th June), Cape Town (Friday, 15th June) and in Johannesburg (Friday, 22nd June).

All entries will be showcased on a BIC® microsite portal and the public will be encouraged to vote for their favourite piece of art. The 20 entries that receive the most votes will be viewed by a panel of judges that will select the final three winners. The first prize winner will receive R30 000, second winner will get a Nikon Camera bundle worth R8 000 and third an artistry kit valued at R3 000.   But the remainder of the 17 finalists will not be forgotten and each will receive R2 000.

The open days will provide inspiration to the artists. At the venues there will be BIC® chill zones where students can relax and draw. These will be set up the week of the open day.  The winner of the 2017 BIC® Art Master, 29-year-old KZN civil engineer by day and artist at night, Samukelo Gasa, will be there, giving master classes to the students and providing advice on pen/pencil art as well as motivating them to follow their passion and developing their skills. One-on-one mentoring will be available to those who want it.

“Every great piece of art started off with an idea that was put on paper using a pen or a pencil,” said Karen Moodley, BIC® Brand Manager, Stationery, Southern, East and Central Africa.  “Through the BIC® Art Master we are helping to power the potential of young artists and giving them the opportunity to show off their creative skills, using our stationery. There were 150 entries last year and they were breath taking. We are eager to see what the class of 2018 can do.”

Gasa says that winning the competition last year has changed his life and leveraged his status as an influencer and artist.  “Drawing is my passion!  It is how I relax and feel good about the world!  Winning the competition took me by surprise last year as I saw all the amazing art that was submitted.  But win I did and it has changed my life as I am now recognised as an artist even though it is a side line for me.  It has opened doors for me and is starting to give me another source of revenue.  I am excited to meet up with artists at the BIC® Open Days and giving back to the students as that was where I started.”
