2019 is starting off on a great note with women taking the wheel in the world of creatives. So its only befitting that we show off and show out with childrens book illustrator and book cover designer Jeanine Henning

Who is Jeanine Henning and what do you do?

I’m a professional illustrator for children’s books as well as book cover designer, writer and online shop owner. I particularly enjoy character development and design which translates well into both publishing and the broad media that is advertising, private commissions and basically anything that requires illustration. My illustration and design experience includes 20 years in publishing, game design, comic art and marketing.

Tell us about your work?

Illustration is my full time job and I love it! A large quantity of my client base is foreign, which means I’m permanently in touch with fast-changing international trends when it comes to design, illustration and technology. Most of my work is done for both traditional publishers and media commission clients.

What inspires your work?

Life. Books. Technology. Movies. Futurism. People. Music. Experiences. And particularly my clients themselves as they are the seeds of the ideas that they bring to me.

What are you currently working on?

A variety of projects. Every month brings new projects and clients so it’s ever-changing and ever-growing. For January and February I’m working on a selection of children’s books, character development, product design and book covers.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?

Put in the hours. Learn to illustrate and design ‘the old school’ way before downloading apps. It’s the old-school training that develops your human insight and helps you create a character’s personality (and yes, soul) from scratch as to be believable by consumers. Become well acquainted with marketing tips and build your career out as a business because that’s essentially what will drive your success: approaching your talent as a business that you have to market and get noticed in a very competitive market. And then to top it off with excellent client service and reliability!

What has been the highlight of your career thus far?

This one is hard to answer because I ‘live my highlights’ through my clients’ successes. I buy into my clients’ visions and build it out with them. So when they’re happy, successful and or win awards – it’s a highlight for me every time.
