“When a vegetarian is handed the task to creative direct and curate the meat issue of Migrate, what is the result? Bloody brilliance!” So says Roanna Williams, Creative Director of Migrate, the Loeries magazine.

Brilliance is the word. Filled with unsettling stories and extraordinary images inspired by the theme of Meat, Migrate offers readers an alluring journey into the furthest recesses of the human psyche. Explaining the choice of theme, editor-in-chief Andrew Human points out: “Our relationship with meat is inextricably linked to our culture, our history, religion and our language.”

If this issue is the meatiest Migrate yet, it’s all thanks to the rare and well done work of creatives from Russia, the Ukraine, Germany, UK, USA, Spain and South Africa. Some of the most challenging images are from Chadwick and Spector’s remarkable Museum Anatomy collection, where famous paintings are turned into body art that combines antiquity, history and technology in a contemporary context.

Not only is the new Migrate beautiful to look at, it’s seductive to touch too. Printed by Ultra Litho using Antalis Hi-Q Titan Plus for the first time, it is a feast for the senses.

As Anonyporpoise says: “Here is the important thing about the way things work in the world. Everything gets eaten.”

Today we chat with Cape Town based photographer and video maker, Sydelle Willow Smith. Enjoy!

Who is Sydelle Willow Smith and what do you do?

I am a 26 year old female photographer/video maker based in Cape Town originally from Johannesburg, that believes that visual mediums have the power to provoke and make a social commentary or impact about the realities of everyday life, that many may not have paid attention to before. I studied Anthropology (Honors) at UCT, also focusing on Video Production and Film Theory. I work for a variety of clients and organisations including Redbull, Virgin Active, The African Centre for Cities, Greenpop amongst others.

How would you define your style or art?

I am heavily influenced by documentary photographers and filmmakers, and “artists” whatever that classification means, who are unafraid to confront social stagnation through play and provocation.

What inspires your work?

South Africa’s complex social landscape and the individual and collective ways people navigate it, make sense of it, make or break home in it. I am interested in showing positive experiences that do not ignore the difficulties, while I want my work to be serious, I also photograph things based purely on beautiful light, or a fun moment. My influences include Alec Soth, Susan Meirelles, Alex Webb, Malik Sidebe, Jim Goldberg and the films of Fernando Meirelles, Jim Jarmusch, and the writings of Jonathan Fraezer and Ben Okri.

Researcher/Camera Operator at Makhulu Productions

What are you currently working on?

I am the 2012 recipient of the Gisele Wulfsohn Mentorship at The Market Photo Workshop and winner of a residency award from The Africa Centre to attend Jiwar Creation and Society in Barcelona in November. http://www.marketphotoworkshop.co.za/content/page/gisele-wulfsohn-mentorship-in-photography
http://www.africacentre.net/air-2012-short-list

These opportunities are allowing me to complete a body of work that focuses on the ways immigrants from other African countries and local South Africans are coming together, as friends, lovers, business partners, integrating and experiencing social inclusion and belonging. I am interested in documenting the otherside of the coin to xenophobia – conviviality, with the hope that documenting them, exposing them, will breed a greater culture of togetherness in someway by telling stories of everyday life of individuals. The project is called Making Neighbourhood, and will potentially be exhibited in October in Johannesburg, and then I am aiming to have a public exhibition of the work next year in congested areas, like train stations.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?

Its tough, you have to be focused, ambitious, work well with all kinds of people, deliver on your promises, and never give up.

Where can our readers follow your work?

Durban, South Africa: Eighteen projects by African filmmakers have been selected for the finance forum of the Durban FilmMart (DFM) which takes place from July 19 to 22 during the 34th Durban International Film Festival (July 18 to 28).

The Durban FilmMart, which is a co-production, finance market, and filmmakers networking event, is a joint programme of the Durban Film Office (DFO) and the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF). The event, an important event on the South African film calendar, is an opportunity for filmmakers, financiers and top film experts to gather and share expertize, explore new ventures and keep up to date with industry trends.

The finance forum of the DFM provides filmmakers from across Africa an opportunity to pitch their projects to international financiers, distributors, sales agents and potential co-producers, as well as meet experts in master classes, attend meetings and engage with industry professionals.

“The Durban FilmMart, which attracted around 350 delegates last year, is now firmly established as a prominent project development and finance forum on the continent,” said Toni Monty of the Durban Film Office, who is currently at Cannes to promote the DFM. “ We are pleased that the filmmakers are now looking to this market as a valuable step in the development of their projects.”

A total of 113 submissions, comprising 31 documentaries and 82 features were received, out of which eight documentaries and 10 fiction projects were selected. A Reader Panel of African and international film professionals assessed these projects and made the selection based on a number of standard criteria. The directors and producers of these projects will have one-on-one meetings with potential investors and co-producers at the Finance Forum.

“Making film is not simple process. Months and years of planning go into developing concepts and projects. The DFM allows filmmakers an opportunity to unpack and investigate financing possibilities for their projects and it can provide the momentum to shift projects to the next level.” says Peter Machen, the manager of the DIFF. “We look forward to seeing how the DFM paves the way for further opportunities for these African filmmakers.”

ABOUT AL JAZEERA

Al Jazeera English is an international news channel, holding over sixty bureaus which span six different continents. Since being established in 2006, it has continued to grow in reach and popularity due to its global coverage, especially from under-reported regions. The channel currently broadcasts to over 250m households across 130 countries. Its in-depthapproach to journalism has won it numerous awards and plaudits over the years, including RTS News Channel of the Year 2012, Freesat Best News Channel, the Columbia Journalism Award, a DuPont award, and a George Polk award.

Al Jazeera is one of the world’s leading media corporations, encompassing news, documentary and sport channels. It was the first independent news channel in the Arab world dedicated to covering and uncovering stories in the region. It is now a media network consisting of over 20 channels Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Arabic, Al Jazeera Balkans, Al Jazeera Sport, Al Jazeera Mubasher, Al Jazeera Documentary, the Al Jazeera Media Training and Development Center, and the Al Jazeera Center for Studies.

The Panel

Dominique Young

A senior producer based in Al Jazeera English’s bureau in London, Young commissions a wide range of documentaries on African and Middle Eastern subject matter, for broadcast in the channel’s flagship observational documentary strand, Witness, as well as other documentary seasons.

Witness broadcasts one 25th film and one 48th film each week. Witness films are character-led, first-person stories which set the context to the daily news agenda and provide an insight into key events of the day as they impact on the lives of ordinary people. Witness documentaries are inspirational and provocative with a global resonance and appeal. As far as possible, Witness stories are told by local filmmakers, as Witness aims to showcase the work of established and emerging documentary talent from around the world.

Diarmuid Jeffreys

An award-winning journalist and television producer with 30 years experience in the media industry, Jeffreys has been an executive producer at Al Jazeera English since 2008. Now based in Doha, he is responsible for its People & Power investigative current affairs programme and a range of other documentaries across the network. In 2011, that output also included several films as part of AJE’s much praised coverage of the Arab Awakening. In the last three years his programmes have won an Amnesty Award for Best Television Documentary 2010, the Rory Peck Best Features Award 2011, Best Documentary 2011 from the Human Trafficking Foundation, and a 2013 Silver Medal for Best Investigative Documentary at the New York Film Festival. They have twice been commended in the Best Investigative Documentary category by the Association of International Broadcasters. In May 2012, another series, Africa Investigates (in which African journalists target corruption and human rights abuses across their continent), won a One World Media Award.

With a new half-hour edition every week and broadcast throughout the year, People & Power pursues stories from all over the world; combining hard-hitting, revelatory and incisive television journalism with high quality filmmaking, probing deep into stories of global significance and investigating everything from political and corporate wrongdoing, human rights abuses and the origins of conflict to the plight of the world¹s most vulnerable peoples. Over the last four years it has filmed everywhere – from Pakistan to Peru, from the USA to Afghanistan, from South Africa to Brazil, and especially across the Middle East as it has produce award-winning coverage of dramatic events in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Algeria and elsewhere.

Cinemark, the official local representatives of Cannes Lions and its affiliated global advertising awards programmes, presents the latest news from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is the world’s largest and most prestigious annual awards and celebration of creative excellence in advertising and communications. Every year, the Festival organisers present The Media Person of the Year Award to a prominent personality who is an influential figure in the development of today’s media landscape, ultimately playing an integral part in shaping the future of the industry.

This year, Cannes Lions is proud to honour YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar, who leads the video community that 1 billion people across the globe use to access information, share video, and shape culture.

Founded in 2005, YouTube was acquired by Google the following year. Since taking the role in 2009, Salar has overseen the expansion of YouTube into a global broadcast platform. Under his leadership, YouTube’s site design and its investments have been reshaped to focus on channels and the emerging content creators behind them. YouTube’s usage has been increasing at tremendous rates, to six billion hours of video watched each month, a 50% increase over the past year. YouTube has also launched TrueView, the advertising format whereby advertisers only pay for ads watched, and has doubled the number of advertisers using it in the last year.

Philip Thomas, CEO of Cannes Lions says, “YouTube has become a global phenomenon under Salar’s leadership. The statistics say it all: more than one billion unique users a month watch more than six billion hours of video. In 2011, YouTube had more than one trillion views – a simply staggering statistic. But YouTube is more than a formidable communications tool of everyday life. YouTube has become a key way for people throughout the world to share their cultures and stories, helping us understand and connect with one another. And for businesses, YouTube is enabling the next generation of great channels, similar to how cable systems enabled the emergence of modern TV programming and advertising. In the coming years, YouTube will surely become ever-more important to content-creators and advertisers the world over, and so Cannes Lions is delighted to recognise Salar’s achievements and present him with the Media Person of the Year award.”

Salar Kamangar says, “Content creators and advertisers alike are building successful YouTube channels that tap into a global community of fans, with more than one million of these channels now earning revenue. I’m delighted to accept this award not just on behalf of YouTube, but on behalf of the artists and producers across the world whose creativity has established YouTube as the global destination for video.”

Google’s ninth employee, Salar’s early roles at Google included drafting its first business plan, starting its early legal and finance functions, and helping to found Google’s product team. While leading product management for Google’s advertising and monetisation products, Salar and his engineering partner designed and launched AdWords, helping the program grow into a business generating billions of dollars a year. Salar also led product management teams for Google’s web applications, including Gmail and Docs. Salar earned his bachelor’s degree in biological sciences with honours from Stanford University.

Salar Kamangar will be presented with the Media Person of the Year honour on Wednesday 19 June in the Palais des Festivals, Cannes, France.

Previous recipients of the Media Person of the Year Award include, Jack Dorsey, Creator, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Twitter; Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google; Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook; Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft Corporation; Tsuneo Watanabe, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings; Sumner Redstone, Chairman and CEO of Viacom; and Gerald Levin, CEO of AOL Time Warner.

Happy Monday Creatives! Today we chat with Luke Daniel about his love for photography. Enjoy!

Who is Luke Daniel and what do you do?
I’m a photographer born and bred in Cape Town – focusing mainly on South African social documentary.

How would you define your style or art?
I try create honest, real images which convey a sense of relation to the scene photographed. I try tell stories through my images – stories which will make the viewer laugh, cry and everything in-between.

What inspires your work?

The world around me inspires me. Walking the streets, forming relationships with people. Being around people living in opulence, and people living in poverty. Angry people, happy people.Society inspires me, and motivates me. And at times, it does the opposite, too.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a few long term documentary projects, which involves many kilometers of travel across our crazy, beautiful country.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
As cliché as it sounds – don’t give up. Keep pushing, through disappointment and rejection. And never stop learning. Don’t become complacent. Work harder and smarter. Get out there and shoot, shoot, shoot.

I’ve been waiting for some time to showcase Mads work, have been a silent fan for sometime now, so its my pleasure to bring this interview to you guys. Enjoy!

Who is Mads and what do you do?

Mads Norgaard is a Danish-born photographer, educated and living in South Africa. Based in Cape Town, I specializes in documentary and commercial photography. My documentary work revolves around topics like transport and everyday life in Cape Town with a particular focus on Mitchells Plain.

How would you define your style or art?

My style is very unobtrusive and I keep to available and natural light as much as possible. The outcome is often a more natural look and a moment that is more intense rather than staged. The work displayed in this interview are good examples of what I like to photograph and the style of my photography – portraiture in environment with a focus on transport, social issues and people photographed at events.

What inspires your work?

I am inspired by a lot of different photographers and artists working with different mediums – picking one or even a few would be difficult. South Africa has so many great photographers and especially when it comes to documentary photography.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working as a freelancer and in my time off I focus on building a platform for other photographers called Street Photography SA

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?

My advice to other creatives would be to be the person that creates platforms for yourself as well as for others through social networks but also by creating exhibitions and talks about art.

Where can our readers follow your work?

People can follow my work on my website (www.madsnorgaard.net), Facebook

Today we chat with all round artist, Dane Stops

Who is Dane Stops and what do you do?

I am an artist and a part time drawing lecturer. As an artist the predominant strains are graffiti and figurative. My graffiti ranges in style; from 3D lettering to objects shaped into letters to shapes, which are only letter because of the context and the idea of a letter, and not because of what letters look like. So legibility isn’t key. My figurative work stems from life drawing classes, studies and what we teach in drawing.

How would you define your style or art?

I would say that there are elements of realism and stylization. Definitely a 3D graffiti artist, but in more ways than my letters just having an illusion of depth.

What inspires your work?

Some of the things mentioned above inspire my work. I really enjoy the play between representations of 3D and 2D. I am interested in how 3D can be represented in 2D. Aside from technical knowledge it is hard to pin down what inspires work. I have done work that was thought of because of something I saw in a movie or read or heard.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently undertaking my Masters. My study revolves around representations of the nude figure. That is my main focus, so lots of reading and writing and drawing. I am also trying to get more walls painted, personal work and jobs, so contact me.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?

I think the immediate advice would be to look for influences outside of what you do. Copy things, it’s a faster way of learning, but, once you have done that identify what you think is wrong and better it.

Cinemark, the official local representatives of Cannes Lions and its affiliated global advertising awards programmes, presents the latest news from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has announced that this year a selection of its world-class content will be streamed live across the globe through Lions Live – a partnership between Cannes Lions, global media agency network Mindshare and YouTube.

Lions Live will stream one live seminar session per day on the Cannes Lions YouTube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/canneslions for the duration of the Festival, with sessions selected via an open vote by the public. Each streamed session will then be accessible on-demand for a period of two weeks following the Festival. Voting for the session to be streamed will be opened on Friday 24 May 2013 and will close one week before the Festival begins.

About the initiative, Philip Thomas, CEO, Lions Festivals, says, “Every year Cannes Lions brings global speakers to its stage and showcases outstanding content that is thought provoking, inspirational and forward-thinking. We’re excited to be taking this live, offering a taste of the Cannes experience to those that are unable to make it to the South of France.”

Some of the globally-renowned speakers that will take to the stage at this year’s Festival include Jenson Button, Lou Reed, Sean Combs, Annie Leibovitz and Jack Black. While industry legends will include Lee Clow, Global Director of Media Arts,

TBWA\Worldwide, Chairman, TBWA\Media Arts Lab; Nick Law, Global Chief Creative Officer, R/GA; Maurice Lévy, Chairman, CEO, Publicis Groupe; Andrew Robertson, President, Chief Executive Officer, BBDO Worldwide; Sir Martin Sorrell, Chief Executive, WPP; and James Hilton, Co-Founder, Chief Creative Officer, AKQA.

Nick Emery, CEO, Mindshare, comments, “We believe that we work in the most exciting industry in the world and we are delighted to be able to share some of the reason why with the wider marketing world. We believe that marketing has to be fundamentally adaptive to achieve the best results and Lions Live is an experience that adapts, where the viewer’s decide the content.”

About Lions Live, Matt Brittin, VP Google, Northern and Central Europe, says, ”Cannes Lions attracts the world’s best creatives to share the latest and boldest ideas.
