South African design firm Haldane Martin Iconic Design create innovative high-concept commercial interiors like Truth Coffee and original, iconic furniture.
Designer Haldane Martin has been instrumental in the emergence of a new South African design language, both in his early signature furniture designs and more recent commercial interiors.
Early works such as the iconic Songololo sofa and Zulu Mama chair were groundbreaking in seamlessly integrating indigenous craft, sustainability, cultural identity, biomimicry, geometry and digital design, becoming sought-after by design collectors.
The studio’s high-concept interior design has also captured global attention. Haldane Martin works together with commercial partners to create extraordinary spaces, transforming concepts that capture a brand’s essence into innovative interiors with unique character. Original furniture designs and custom fittings further manifest the identity in a physical, three-dimensional way.
The studio’s first large-scale commercial project, the steampunk-inspired Truth Coffee, was named “world’s best coffee shop” by MSN and The Telegraph, and won a Gold Loerie for interior design while Urbanologi won Best Restaurant Design in Africa and the Middle East at the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards. These concept interiors with bespoke elements are exemplary of the ability to tap into the essence of the client’s brand identity and express it through objects and space in an iconic way.
For Haldane, design is iconic when it marries innovation with beauty and captures the zeitgeist in a timeless fashion. He believes in integrating conceptual depth, aesthetic beauty and elegant functionality into one seamless whole.
