Today we have an awesome chat with Gavin Goodman about his career as a commercial stills photographer!
Who is Gavin Goodman and what do you do?
I’m a surfer who is born and raised in one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Cape Town. I work as a commercial stills photographer and occasionally shoot as a director of photography in the film world .
How would you define your style or art?
My images have a humorous , tongue-in-cheek element to them as well as a cinematic/storytelling feel. This comes from working for 6-7 years as a cinematographer in the local film industry . These days everything I do starts with the idea/concept and evolves from there .
What inspires your work?
I love cinema and have a massive collection of ‘The American Cinematographer’ magazines . Definitely inspired by some of the legendary cinematographers of our time such as Wally Pfister, Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, Robert Richardson to name a few. I very much embrace this new age of technology and information and follow a number of online blogs [tech and creative related] as well as just being inspired by daily life .
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently in pre-production for another Ruby Lingerie campaign . A very tongue-in-cheek look at the controversial topic of Fracking in the Karoo . I am super excited about this project as its something I feel really strongly about.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Find your voice . Once you develop your point of view and find a way to incorporate this into your work , people will connect more with what u are doing . And just keep shooting
