Who is Herman Potgieter and what do you do?
I am a Illustrator and Designer and 3d artist. I have been working in the print industry for the last 10 years odd years working with all kind of print media. I recently taking another direction and step away from the 9-5 and only concentrating on design and illustration. I love using all kinds of medium from traditional illustration to digital to painting murals on walls but always fully loaded with a sketch book and some pens. Coming from studying 2d animation I have a great passion for illustration. I got into painting with spray paint since a young age being exposed to graffiti through skating seeing amazing artworks on the inside of the skate park walls eventually incorporated it into my own personal style. I spend most of my time doing illustration when in not freelancing design or Illustrations for work.
How would you define your style or art?
I would say …. kinda sketchy ha ha. I like a mess I find that the most perfect artwork is NOT perfect. basically I just create organized chaos. I like making inconsistent strokes and lines and see how far I can manipulate the composition. And in the same time keep it fresh not follow any certain style or be influenced by other people. I like creating things where people can say wow have seen that before. But sketchy…..
What inspires your work?
The world inspires my work I get inspiration from anywhere I could meet an interesting person and illustrate there stories or them.. or just see something through the window that looks good for a composition for something …..definitely coffee! Sometime I have no idea and just scratch some lines on to a paper and see what it looks like. Its easy to find inspiration its all around us you just have to look for it. Music is a great inspiration also. I look at other artists and see what they doing and that only keeps me motivated … You need to be motivated I say that plays a bigger part than inspiration everybody has a good idea. Whether you follow through with the idea is up to you.
What are you currently working on?
I just finished painting a wall for a no profit organization in phillipie its called “infecting the city”, It was a project based on uplifting the comunity and concentrated on the phillipie library to get peep to come to the library and got all the community kids involved to come help paint the wall. Currently Im working some Illustrations for some T-shirt prints and once of prints for a future project. Creating and Painting all day every day. I have just finished of some design projects also and now starting to get some things ready for the Africa Burn event that is happening soon so lots to do there.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
I would say your best weapon is motivation!! If you starting of keep going at it and when it feels like your about to give up…… keep going! People come up to me and say “Wow I wish I can draw like that, some people just have that skill!” ITS NOT TRUE…… everybody has skills you just have to be motivated to learn one…. I use to suck at drawing and look at people and say I wish I can draw like that and made that decision that I WILL learn that skill…… its 25 years later and Im still learning .. still inspired… still motivated to get better because there always some better than you.
NEVER GIVE UP….
