Joe Public have been awarded two Gold Pencils for their radio campaign Project English, at this year’s One Show awards. The campaign for One School At A Time demonstrated how regular, additional English tutoring improved learners’ understanding of the language. The campaign swooped up a Gold Pencil for Public Service and a Gold Pencil for Radio.

“We love doing work that has a social impact and One School At A Time is close to our hearts,” said Jeanine Vermaak, copywriter. “We are so thrilled to have won a Pencil, it’s one of the highest creative honours. We are truly humbled,” said Freda Raubenheimer, art director.

One School At A Time is a registered non-profit organisation, established by Joe Public in 2008. The programme aims to createa scalable and sustainable systemthat will support the advancement of high schools in Johannesburg so that they not only become exceptional, but shining examples to the rest of the world. Forte High School, Dobsonville Soweto and Itirele-Zenzele Comprehensive School, Diepsloot are examples of such a pertinent partnership. From upgrading the schools’ libraries, tennis and basketball courts, ablution facilities to hosting motivational talks, study camps and weekly interaction this four year partnership has reflected in the schools’ pass rate.

The steady improvements in the schools have lead to some great matric pass rate results. Forte High has seen a 52% to 92% improvement in the past five years with Itirele-Zenzele seeing a 74% to 81% improvement in the last year alone.

“Creativity inspires change at One School At A Time. Our students are motivated by it, as well as our donors.Bothschools will directly benefit from all funds raised for the programme, which help to supply everything from school shoes to facility upgrades. Funds are raised through both donor and Joe Public contributions throughout the year. Good creativity really does do good,” said Bronwyn James MD of One School At A Time.

“Along with raising funds to hire a full-time English tutor at Forte High School,” said Pepe Marais, CCO, Joe Public, “this is a testament to creativity making a difference. One School At A Time speaks to our ultimate goal as an agency ­– Growth of our country.”
