Cape Town Based Illustrator and Graphic Designer – Emma Strydom

Who is Emma Strydom and what do you do?
I’m a 25 year old Cape Town based Illustrator and Graphic Designer working at 140 BBDO.
How would you define your style or art?
I draw in different styles, but my signature style would be decadent, flamboyant and whimsical. Im quite into the olden days glamour … Its personal and humerous. Borderline comically narrative.
What inspires your work?
For the work I do in my free time, my immediate life and the people in it inspire me tremendously. I want to capture multiple moments in one image. A s a child I was absolutely fascinated by Roald Dahl’s stories and French/Victorian times – I love the flamboyant decorative style. I adore the glamour and decadence of that time.
Anything that is fun and challenging for me to produce is always inspiring and rewarding. Always evolving, broadening and refining my skills set is most inspiring.
What are you currently working on?
I’m frequently busy with personalised commissions and S.E.E.D. Libraries with 140 BBDO. I’m also starting on some new experimental work for an exhibition.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Don’t whine, don’t be scared of working hard. Always stay humble.
